The Story of Chi-Jen
Rome was not built in a day.Over centuries and following numerous transformations, she arose from a small town at the intersection of crossroads to become the artistic and cultural center of the Western world. Stories of Rome capture audiences worldwide, illustrating the power of initiative, determination and resilience. The innovation and development of Chi-Jen Primary School over the last half century exhibits similar qualities. Much like Rome, Chi-Ren Primary School started from small beginnings and over time, through the leadership and ingenuity of its administrators and educators, evolving into a locally renowned educational institution. |
On March 8, 1951, Mr. Tze-Chuang Sheng, a formal member of the National Assembly, founded the Chi-Jen Primary School. Mr. Tze-Chuang Sheng recognized that education was the core of the country’s foundation and the future of Taiwan. He believed that establishing roots for a successful and effective educational system in Taiwan would contribute to a prosperous nation. Together with his wife, Mrs. Che-Kwang Shih, a well-trained educator from Nanking Normal University, they set to turn this dream into a reality. |
As an initial step, Mr. Tze-Chuang Sheng and Mrs. Che-Kwang Shih opened a kindergarten at their residence in Hsichou, Taipei. The kindergarten provided a much needed service for an area that was short on education. Promoting the teachings and principles of Confucious and Meng-tse, the kindergarten emphasized the spirit of caring for others as a priority. Befitting this ideology, the name “Chi-Jen”, was chosen. |
Chi-Jen started with small beginnings on March 8, 1951 with seventeen enrolled students. Despite setbacks during the pioneering phase, by the Summer of 1951, prominent residents in the local neighborhood gathered support to take Chi-Jen to the next phase. While these residents wanted to set up a primary school, this was not a simple task. The local governmental policy for establishing a private primary school was not clearly drafted, and the process was left pending and undetermined. In August 1951, through perseverance of Mr. Tze-Chuang Sheng and Mrs. Che-Kwang Shih, along with the aid and influence of members of the Salt Administrative Bureau, a division of the Ministry of Finance, the application to create a private primary school was accepted and school registration approved under the name of The Subsidiary Primary School of the Salt Finance Administration. At this time, Chi-Jen became a subsidiary school under the Salt Administrative Bureau. The enrollment of new students started in August of 1951 and classes began the following month. Mrs. Che-Kwang Shih, the director of the kindergarten, became the first principal of Chi-Jen Primary School. |
Thereafter, in 1955, following a change in government policy, Chi-Jen became an official independent private school under the Department of Education. From its modest beginnings, Chi-Jen has flourished over 5 decades to become a prominent educational institution, constantly evolving to meet the demands of its students in Taiwan. |
